Harris County Sits on a Major Bird Migration Route

The Houston area lies along the Central Flyway, one of the main bird migration routes in North America, making Harris County a strong birding destination in spring and fall.

Millions of migratory birds pass through the Gulf Coast each spring and fall. Harris County's bayous, wetlands, parks, and proximity to Galveston Bay create multiple habitats for shorebirds, wading birds, songbirds, and waterfowl.

TPWD's Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail includes sites in and near Harris County as part of the Upper Texas Coast loop. Many of these sites are free to access. Spring migration — roughly March through May — brings the highest diversity of species. Check tpwd.texas.gov for site lists and maps.
