Hunting and Fishing Licenses

A License Is Required to Hunt or Fish in Texas Public Waters

Anyone hunting or fishing in Jefferson County on public land or public waters must have a valid Texas hunting or fishing license from TPWD — there are very few exceptions.

Texas requires a hunting license to take any animal, bird, frog, or turtle in the state, regardless of age, with limited exceptions. Fishing in public waters requires a fishing license plus either a freshwater or saltwater endorsement depending on where you fish. Jefferson County has both coastal and inland fisheries, so check which endorsement you need.

Licenses can be purchased online at tpwd.texas.gov, by phone at (800) 792-1112, or at sporting goods retailers across the county. For public hunting areas like J.D. Murphree WMA, you also need an Annual Public Hunting permit or Limited Public Use permit. Fines for fishing or hunting without a license can be significant.
