Coastal Windstorm Coverage: TWIA and the WPI-8 Certificate in Aransas County
Aransas County is in the Texas windstorm insurance zone. Most properties need a WPI-8 certificate to get wind and hail coverage through TWIA.
TWIA stands for the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. It is the backup insurer for wind and hail in Texas's 14 first-tier coastal counties. Aransas County is one of them. Private insurers often won't cover windstorm on the coast. If that happens, you can apply to TWIA instead.
To qualify for TWIA, your home usually needs a WPI-8 certificate. This is a document from the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). It shows the home was built or repaired to resist windstorm damage. The requirement covers new construction, re-roofs, repairs, and additions. Even if your home was built before the program started in 1988, you may still need this certificate. You can search for WPI-8 records on the TDI website. You can also call the Windstorm Inspections Program at 800-248-6032.
Buying or selling a coastal home? Always ask whether a WPI-8 exists. Without one, you may not be able to get windstorm insurance. Lenders usually require it. Check TWIA's website and TDI's windstorm pages for the latest rules before you buy or list a home.
