Registration & Inspection

How vehicle registration renewal works in Rockwall County

As of January 2025, Rockwall County vehicles no longer need a safety inspection. But you still need an annual emissions test before you can renew your registration.

Texas law changed on January 1, 2025. House Bill 3297 ended the safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles in Rockwall County. You no longer take your car in for a safety check.

You still need an emissions test every year. Take your car to an authorized testing station. The station sends the result to the state. Then renew your registration with TxDMV. You can do it online, by mail, or in person. The state checks that your emissions test passed before it lets you renew. You get one sticker showing your expiration month.

New Texas residents must still register their vehicle. Check TxDMV and DPS for current rules on how long you have to register after moving to Texas.
