University Town

Denton is home to two major state universities

The University of North Texas (founded 1890) and Texas Woman's University (founded 1901 as Girls Industrial College) both anchor Denton's identity as a college town.

Texas Woman's University started in 1901. That year the Texas Legislature approved a state-supported women's college that would mix regular school subjects with practical skills. A commission picked Denton as the location in 1902 and the school opened there. The school took the name Texas Woman's University in 1957. It began admitting undergraduate men in 1994.

The University of North Texas was founded in 1890. Together, the two schools shape Denton's economy, culture, and housing market. At any given time, a large share of people in the city are students, faculty, or workers tied to the campuses. That makes Denton very different from other fast-growing suburbs in Denton County.
