Taylor County vehicles need no inspection — safety or emissions — at registration

As of January 1, 2025, Texas dropped the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles. Taylor County is also not an emissions-testing county, so no inspection of any kind is needed at registration.

Texas stopped requiring a yearly safety inspection for non-commercial passenger cars on January 1, 2025. That change came from HB 3297.

You no longer go to an inspection station before renewing your registration. Instead, you pay a $7.50 replacement fee when you register.

Taylor County is not an emissions county. No smog test is needed here.

Commercial vehicles still need a safety inspection. That rule applies statewide. Emissions tests only apply in certain large counties. Taylor County is not one of them.

Rules can change. Check the TxDMV or Texas DPS website before you renew to be sure.
