A Groundwater District Oversees Water Wells in Gonzales County
If you plan to drill a water well or buy rural land in Gonzales County, a local groundwater district has rules you need to know first.
The Gonzales County Underground Water Conservation District (GCUWCD) manages groundwater across most of the county — about 576,000 acres. Before you drill a well, contact the district. Well drillers must also hold a valid Texas license from the Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
The district keeps an interactive map of registered wells and water quality data, which is useful when you are buying rural land. To get permit details and fee schedules, call the district at 830-672-1047 or visit gcuwcd.org. If your land has no city water, you will likely need a well and a septic system — plan for both before you close on property.
