There's nothing more Texas in July than a slow float down a cool river or a jump into a spring-fed swimming hole. The Guadalupe, Comal, San Marcos, and Frio draw tubers by the thousands, and hidden swimming holes dot the Hill Country. Two things make a river day go right - respecting the water, and knowing the rules - and this guide leads with both.

Safety first
Central Texas is often called 'Flash Flood Alley,' one of the most flood-prone parts of the country. Rivers here can rise more than 20 feet in an hour or two - sometimes from rain falling miles upstream under a clear sky. Check the river flow and the weather before you go, and never enter rising water.

A few terms you'll meet along the way.
A river the public can legally use - its bed averages 30+ feet wide, or it could serve as a 'highway for travel.'
You can float a navigable river through private land.
The surveyed legal line between the public riverbed and the private bank.
You can't eyeball it, so stay down in the streambed.
A small dam with a churning backwash that can trap a person.
Stay well clear - portage around it.
A downed tree or branch that water flows through but a body can't.
A deadly river hazard - steer clear.
Water that comes from underground springs - cold and clear year-round.

Quirks worth knowing
Quick answers
If it's navigable, yes - the riverbed is public, so you can float, wade, and fish it. But enter and exit only at public access, and don't go up onto the private banks.
They can't legally fence you out of a navigable river or block passage within a public road's right-of-way - but you can't cross their land to reach the water.
Not on the Comal or the Guadalupe inside New Braunfels (the 'can ban') - bring reusable containers. And no glass anywhere.
For Hamilton Pool and Blue Hole, yes - and they book up. Barton Springs doesn't take reservations. (Jacob's Well swimming is currently suspended.)
It's spring-fed - often 68-76 degrees year-round.
Yes, but very rare. Keep water out of your nose (nose clips or hold your nose) in warm freshwater and you've handled the risk.
