Farm or Ranch Land Can Be Taxed at Agricultural Value

Landowners in Milam County who use their land for farming, ranching, beekeeping, or wildlife management may qualify for a much lower tax appraisal.

Texas taxes qualifying ag land based on how productive it is, not what it would sell for on the market. This can mean a big drop in your annual tax bill. To qualify, the land must have been used for farming, ranching, wildlife management, or beekeeping for at least five of the last seven years.

You apply with the Milam Appraisal District using Form 1-D-1. The filing deadline is generally May 1 each year, though late applications are accepted with a penalty. Beekeeping has its own acreage rules. If you stop the qualifying use, a rollback tax (back taxes plus interest) may apply. Check the Milam Appraisal District's agriculture page for current intensity standards and acreage minimums.
