Cut Your Property Tax Bill with a Homestead Exemption

If your home in Milam County is your primary residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption to lower your taxable property value.

A homestead exemption reduces the value used to calculate your property tax. In Texas, the state requires school districts to give a $100,000 exemption on your home's taxable value. Local taxing units may add more on top of that. Seniors and disabled homeowners can qualify for additional breaks.

You apply once through the Milam Central Appraisal District in Cameron. There is no fee. You must own the home and live there as your main address. Once approved, you do not need to reapply each year. Check the appraisal district site for the current form and filing window, as deadlines change.
