Farming and Ag Valuation in Hall County

Hall County is an agricultural county where cotton, peanuts, and cattle dominate, and rural land may qualify for a lower ag-use property tax valuation.

Hall County has over 430,000 acres in farms and ranches. Cotton and peanuts are the main crops. Beef cattle are also a major part of the local economy. Memphis has grain elevators and farm supply businesses that serve the surrounding rural area.

If you buy rural land in Hall County and use it for farming, ranching, or other qualifying purposes, you may be able to apply for an agricultural use valuation. This is sometimes called an 'ag exemption.' It does not eliminate your tax bill, but it lowers the taxable value of the land significantly. You apply through the Hall County Appraisal District. There are rules about how long the land must have been in agricultural use, so check with the appraisal district before you count on this benefit.
