Alibates Flint Quarries: Ancient Stone Tools, Guided Tours Only

Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, north of Amarillo, preserves flint quarry sites used by people for at least 13,000 years and requires a guided tour to visit.

The monument covers 1,371 acres along the Canadian River. People quarried the colorful agatized dolomite flint here for thousands of years to make tools and weapons. The flint comes in shades of red, orange, purple, and white, and has been found at archaeological sites across North America.

Access to the quarry sites is by guided tour only, departing at 10 a.m. Reservations are required. The monument is administered jointly with Lake Meredith NRA. Call 806-886-3826 or visit nps.gov/alfl to book a tour.
