Route 66 Ran Through Amarillo and Still Draws Visitors
Historic U.S. Route 66 passed through Amarillo, making Potter County a stop on one of the country's most famous roads.
Four U.S. highways — 60, 87, 287, and Route 66 — once merged in Amarillo, making it a major travel hub for people crossing the country. Route 66 connected Chicago to Los Angeles, and Amarillo was a key stopping point in the Texas Panhandle stretch.
Today, portions of the old route and its roadside culture are still visible in Amarillo. The Handbook of Texas documents Amarillo's role as a Route 66 stop. For travelers interested in the historic road, visit the Texas State Historical Association entry on Amarillo at tshaonline.org.
