Appraisal district vs. tax office: who does what in Brazos County
In Brazos County, two separate offices handle property taxes — Brazos CAD sets values and grants exemptions, while the Brazos County Tax Office collects bills.
Brazos Central Appraisal District (Brazos CAD) appraises all real and business personal property in the county, approves exemptions, and hears valuation protests through its Appraisal Review Board (ARB). If you think your property is overvalued, you file a protest with Brazos CAD — not the tax office.
The Brazos County Tax Assessor-Collector's office at 4151 County Park Ct., Bryan collects tax payments for all taxing jurisdictions in the county. This is the office that sends your tax bill and processes payments by check, cash, credit card, or online through brazostax.org. It also handles vehicle registration.
If you want to lower your tax bill, start with Brazos CAD for exemptions or a protest. Check your property's current value, exemptions, and estimated tax at brazoscad.org. For rate and payment questions, go to brazostax.org or the Texas Comptroller's county directory.
