Property Tax Basics

Two offices handle your property tax in Smith County

The Smith County Appraisal District sets your property value; a separate tax office collects what you owe.

Two offices handle property taxes here, and they do different jobs. The Smith County Appraisal District (Smith CAD) decides how much your property is worth each year. That value is used to calculate your tax bill. The Tax Assessor-Collector then sends the bill and collects the money.

If you think your value is too high, you protest with Smith CAD, not the tax office. Smith CAD is at 245 SSE Loop 323 in Tyler. The tax office is at 1517 W. Front St. in Tyler. Each has its own phone number and website.
