Big Lake Bottom WMA Sits Along the Trinity River Southwest of Palestine

Big Lake Bottom WMA covers about 4,253 acres of Trinity River bottomland in Anderson County. It is open to hunting, fishing, birding, and hiking with a public hunting permit, but there are no roads inside.

Big Lake Bottom Wildlife Management Area runs along the Trinity River about 10 miles southwest of Palestine in Anderson County. It covers roughly 4,253 acres of bottomland hardwood forest along the river's floodplain. The area floods often. It is regularly muddy or completely underwater. There are no roads inside — you get in on foot only.

You can hunt waterfowl, small game, and deer. Deer hunters must be chosen through an electronic permit drawing. Fishing, birding, hiking, photography, and camping are also allowed. Visitors 17 and older must carry an Annual Public Hunting or Limited Public Use permit. You must register on-site each day you visit.

Before you go, check current conditions and open dates on the TPWD website. The Trinity River can rise fast after rain upstream, even when local skies look clear. Bring insect repellent, drinking water, and waterproof footwear.
