Big Thicket National Preserve is free to enter and spans 113,000 acres

Big Thicket National Preserve covers more than 113,000 acres across seven Southeast Texas counties and is free to visit, with over 30 miles of trails.

The preserve has no entrance fee. The visitor center is at 6044 FM 420, Kountze — right in Hardin County. There are over 30 miles of hiking trails. You can also canoe or kayak the creeks, bayous, and the Neches River that runs along the county's eastern edge.

Few roads go deep into the preserve. The best way to explore it is on foot or by water. Some activities — camping, hunting, and commercial use — require free permits picked up at the visitor center. Call 409-951-6700 or visit the NPS website to plan your trip.
