Property Tax

Hardin County has two separate property tax offices

One office sets your property value and another collects the tax. They are not the same office, and you deal with each one for different things.

The Hardin County Appraisal District (HCAD) decides what your property is worth for tax purposes. Think of it as the office that sets the number. It is at 105 S. Pine St. in Kountze. If you believe your value is too high, you file a protest at HCAD — not at the tax office.

The Tax Assessor-Collector is a completely separate office. It sends your tax bill and takes your payment. That office is at 300 W. Monroe St., Ste. B-101, also in Kountze. If you have a question about your bill or need to pay, go there. If you have a question about your value, go to HCAD. Knowing which office handles what can save you a wasted trip. The Texas Comptroller's website has contact details for both.
