Homestead Exemption

A homestead exemption can lower your property tax bill

If your Hardin County home is your main residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption that reduces the taxable value.

School districts in Texas must give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on a residence homestead. That means $140,000 of your home's appraised value is not taxed by the school district. Other local taxing units — like the county — may add their own exemptions on top of that.

You apply through the Hardin County Appraisal District. The general deadline is before May 1 of the tax year, but check with the appraisal district for the current date. You must own the home and use it as your main residence. You can only claim one homestead exemption anywhere in Texas.
