Geography

The Brazos River Runs Through Granbury and Shapes the County

Hood County covers 425 square miles in north-central Texas, with the Brazos River as its main waterway and Lake Granbury as the central reservoir.

Hood County is about 41 miles southwest of Fort Worth. Elevations range from roughly 600 to 1,000 feet. The Brazos River and the Paluxy River are the main water sources. Lake Granbury, formed by damming the Brazos, covers about 8,700 acres and was completed in 1969.

The county seat, Granbury, sits directly on the lake. Other communities include Pecan Plantation, Acton, Tolar, and Lipan. The economy includes tourism, ranching, and agriculture. Key crops have historically been pecans, hay, wheat, and peanuts. The county's population grew sharply after 1970 as people moved outward from the DFW metro area.
