Invasive Plants Threaten Caddo Lake

Caddo Lake faces ongoing threats from invasive aquatic plants — including giant salvinia and water hyacinth — that can block boat access and harm the ecosystem.

Giant salvinia, water hyacinth, hydrilla, and crested floating heart have all invaded Caddo Lake. These plants spread fast in warm water and can form dense mats that choke out native species and make areas impassable by boat.

Texas Parks and Wildlife treats problem areas with herbicides each year. Boaters can help by cleaning, draining, and drying gear before moving between water bodies. It is illegal to transport live aquatic plants or nongame fish from the lake. TPWD's aquatic invasives page has current information on what to watch for.
