The Canadian River Cuts Through Northern Potter County
The Canadian River flows east across the northern part of Potter County and created the canyon landscape that now holds Lake Meredith.
Potter County sits on the High Plains at elevations between roughly 3,000 and 3,800 feet. The Canadian River carved deep canyon breaks through the northern section of the county — the valley runs as much as 1,000 feet below the surrounding plateau in places. Lake Meredith was formed in 1965 by a dam on the Canadian River.
The terrain in most of the county is level to rolling prairie. The lake and canyon breaks give the northern part of the county a very different look. The county covers about 902 square miles. Learn more about the region at texasalmanac.com.
