Flood Control & Water Supply
Canyon Lake Was Built to Control Floods on the Guadalupe
Canyon Lake in northern Comal County is owned by the U.S. government and operated for flood control, water supply, and recreation.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Canyon Dam on the Guadalupe River. Construction started in 1958 and the lake began filling in 1964. Its main job is to reduce flood damage downstream. The lake has a conservation storage capacity of approximately 382,000 acre-feet.
The Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA) shares control of the conservation storage and manages water releases. The Corps runs recreation areas around the lake. If you live downstream on the Guadalupe, this dam is your main flood buffer.
