History
Webb County Had a Coal Mining Era
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, coal mining was a major industry in Webb County, a fact largely unknown outside the region.
Coal deposits were worked in Webb County beginning in the 1880s, and mining continued into the 1930s. The industry brought workers from Mexico and Europe and supported the railroad that ran through the area. Communities grew up around the mines.
The coal era ended as oil and gas replaced coal as the region's dominant energy resource. Today the mining communities are mostly gone, but the history shaped the ethnic and social fabric of Webb County. The Texas Handbook of Texas documents this period for those interested in local history.
