Standard homeowners insurance often does not cover wind damage in coastal Texas. Willacy County is in the state's designated windstorm area. That means you may need a separate TWIA policy for wind and hail. TWIA is the state's insurer of last resort — you can only apply after a regular insurer has denied you coverage.

To qualify, your home must meet the applicable building code and be certified by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) or TWIA. Homes built or remodeled after certain dates need an inspection.
