Homestead Exemption
Homestead Exemption Can Lower Your Tax Bill in Willacy County
If this home is where you live, you may qualify for a homestead exemption that reduces what you owe in property taxes.
A homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of your home. That means a smaller tax bill. Texas requires this for any home that is your main residence.
Willacy County offers three main exemptions. A general homestead exemption is available to all qualifying homeowners. A disabled-person exemption is available if you qualify. An over-65 exemption is available when you turn 65. The over-65 exemption also lets you freeze the school part of your tax bill so it cannot go up.
To apply, you need your Texas driver's license. The address on it must match the property address. The deadline to file is before May 1 of the tax year. A homestead can include up to 20 acres if you live on the land.
Apply through the Willacy County Appraisal District. The appraisal district is the office that sets property values for tax purposes. You can find forms at willacycad.org or call 956-689-5979.
