County History
Comal County Was Founded by German Immigrants in 1846
Comal County was formed in 1846 after German immigrants, organized by the Adelsverein society, settled the land a year earlier.
In 1845, Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels organized the German settlement effort for the Adelsverein. Nicolaus Zink led the arriving wagon train to a site on Comal Creek, founding New Braunfels on March 21, 1845. The Texas legislature formed Comal County from part of Bexar County in March 1846 and made New Braunfels the county seat.
By 1850, New Braunfels was reported to be the fourth largest city in Texas. By 1890, roughly 75% of county residents had German ancestry. That heritage still shapes the area today — in the food, festivals, and place names.
