Groundwater / Water Wells
A special district regulates water wells in Kendall County
The Cow Creek Groundwater Conservation District controls well drilling in Kendall County — you need a permit before you drill.
If you want to drill a water well in Kendall County, you must work with the Cow Creek Groundwater Conservation District (CCGCD). The district was created to protect the aquifers that supply water to Hill Country homes and ranches. Texas declared this area a Critical Groundwater Area in 1990.
The district divides wells into four tiers, from small exempt wells to large permitted wells. Each tier has its own rules. The district also enforces drought restriction stages — water use may be limited when aquifer levels drop. Check the district's website or call (830) 816-2504 before you drill. Meetings are held the second Monday of each month.
