Homestead Exemption

A homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of your home

If your Kendall County home is your main residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption that lowers your property tax bill.

A homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of your home. That means you pay less in property taxes each year.

Texas law requires school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their main home's value. Other local taxing units in Kendall County may give extra exemptions of up to 20 percent of the value.

You apply once with the Kendall County Appraisal District. The appraisal district is the office that sets your home's value for tax purposes.

To qualify, you must own the home and it must be your main residence. The general filing deadline is before May 1. Check with the appraisal district for the current date.

The Texas Comptroller's exemption page explains all types — including senior and disability exemptions.
