Public Hunting and Fishing at Daughtrey WMA

The James E. Daughtrey Wildlife Management Area gives the public access to 34,000 acres of South Texas land for hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

The James E. Daughtrey WMA spans Live Oak and McMullen counties. It includes about 34,000 acres of South Texas brush country plus Choke Canyon Reservoir, which covers another 25,733 acres. The area offers hunting for white-tailed deer, javelina, turkey, dove, quail, and waterfowl. Fishing is available from public boat ramps on the reservoir.

Access is limited. Waterfowl hunters need a Texas Parks and Wildlife Annual Public Hunting (APH) permit. Some hunts require a separate special permit. General public access for fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing runs April 1 through August 1. Bank fishing through the WMA is not allowed — you must use the boat ramps. Check TPWD's website for current season dates and permit requirements before you go.
