New Water Wells Need a Permit in McMullen County

The McMullen Groundwater Conservation District oversees well drilling in the county — contact them before you drill.

Most of McMullen County relies on groundwater. The county sits over the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer, one of Texas's major aquifers. The McMullen Groundwater Conservation District (MGCD) manages that water. If you plan to drill a new water well, the district may require a permit. Rules can change, so always check with the district first.

The district office is at 501 River St. in Tilden and can be reached at (361) 274-3900. The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) also tracks well data and aquifer health statewide. Rural properties outside a city water system will almost certainly depend on a private well, so understanding the permitting process before you close on land is important.
