County Seat
Dimmitt is a small farming town about 55 miles southwest of Amarillo
Dimmitt anchors Castro County's economy through agriculture, food processing, and livestock industries.
Dimmitt sits on U.S. Highway 385 in the center of Castro County. It is the county seat and the main place people go for services in the area. Big employers include grain elevators, cotton gins, cattle feedlots, and food processing plants. Those plants handle crops like corn and vegetables. The population has fallen from a peak near 5,000 in 1980 to around 4,000 in recent years.
The town has a hospital, a public school district, and a municipal airport used mainly by farming operations. If you are buying property here, know that the local economy depends heavily on farming and water. Both face long-term problems as the Ogallala Aquifer keeps declining. The Texas Almanac and the Handbook of Texas have solid background on the town.
