Disabled Veterans Get Extra Property Tax Exemptions in Texas

Texas law gives disabled veterans a property tax exemption based on their VA disability rating, and a 100% rating can mean a full exemption on a primary home.

Texas disabled veteran exemptions are set by disability rating. A 10-29% rating removes up to $5,000 from taxable value. A 30-49% rating removes up to $7,500. A 50-69% rating removes up to $10,000. A 70-100% rating removes up to $12,000. Veterans with a 100% total disability rating may qualify for a full exemption on their residence homestead — meaning no property tax on that home.

To apply, file with Hood Central Appraisal District. You will need documentation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans may also be eligible. Contact Hood CAD at 817-573-2471 or visit hoodcad.net for current forms.
