Special Exemptions
Extra property tax breaks for seniors and veterans in Gregg County
Seniors 65 and older, disabled persons, and disabled veterans may qualify for extra property tax reductions in Gregg County beyond the standard homestead exemption.
If you are 65 or older and your Gregg County home is your primary residence, you get an extra $60,000 off your school taxable value. That is on top of the standard $140,000 school exemption. You also get a school tax freeze. That means your school taxes cannot go up as long as you live there — even if your home value rises. Disabled persons get the same freeze benefit.
Disabled veterans get exemptions based on their VA disability rating. At 100% disability, the exemption can wipe out property taxes entirely on your home. Surviving spouses of veterans or first responders killed in the line of duty may also qualify for a full exemption.
