Tax Protest

You can protest your property value each year in Ellis County

Texas law gives Ellis County property owners the right to challenge their appraised value each year through a formal protest with the appraisal district.

Every spring, the Ellis County Appraisal District (ECAD) sends notices showing new appraised values. If you think your value is too high, you can file a protest. The protest deadline is typically May 15 or 30 days after you receive your notice, whichever is later — verify the exact deadline with ECAD each year.

Start by contacting ECAD to schedule an informal hearing. Bring comparable sales data or evidence that your home's value differs from similar properties. If the informal hearing does not resolve it, you can request a formal hearing before the Appraisal Review Board. The process is free. ECAD can be reached at 972-937-3552 or at elliscad.org.
