Building Near the Edwards Aquifer Has Extra Rules

Parts of Comal County sit over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, where construction sites face stricter environmental rules.

The Edwards Aquifer is a large underground water source. It supplies drinking water to millions of Texans, including San Antonio. Parts of Comal County sit over the recharge zone. That is the land where rain soaks into the ground and refills the aquifer.

TCEQ — the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality — runs the Edwards Aquifer Protection Program. It adds extra rules for building on recharge lands. These rules deal with stormwater and runoff. They are meant to keep pollutants from getting into the water supply.

Before you build, check if your property is over the recharge zone. Use the TCEQ Edwards Aquifer Map Viewer to look it up. If your land is in the recharge zone, your contractor must follow the extra rules. Check the TCEQ website for details.
