In Unincorporated Brazoria County, Emergency Services Are Provided by Local ESDs

Outside city limits in Brazoria County, fire and emergency medical services are typically delivered by Emergency Services Districts funded through a separate property tax.

If you live outside a city in Brazoria County, your fire and emergency medical services come from an Emergency Services District (ESD) — not a city department. An ESD is a local government created by a voter election. It collects its own property tax and uses that money to run or contract fire and EMS services in its area.

Brazoria County has several ESDs. ESD No. 3 funds volunteer fire departments across a large part of the county. Other ESDs cover different areas. In rural areas, response times can be much longer than in cities. That can affect your fire insurance costs and property risk.

Before buying, find out which ESD covers the property. If no ESD serves the area, fire protection may be very limited. You can find ESD information on the county's website or through the Texas State Association of Fire and Emergency Districts at safe-d.org.
