Collin County Requires an Emissions Test to Register Your Car
Texas dropped most safety inspections for personal vehicles in January 2025. But Collin County is still in an emissions zone, so your car still needs an emissions test to renew registration.
Texas House Bill 3297 took effect January 1, 2025. It ended the annual safety inspection for most personal vehicles. Instead, you pay a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee when you register. New vehicles (those of the current or preceding model year, not previously registered) pay an initial fee of $16.75 to cover two years.
Collin County is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth emissions zone. That means gasoline-powered vehicles between 2 and 24 years old still need to pass an emissions test. The test checks your car's computer for pollution problems. It is called an On-Board Diagnostic (OBDII) test. You must pass before you can renew your registration. Commercial vehicles still require a full safety inspection statewide. Find a testing station at mytxcar.org or the TxDPS website.
