How the Homestead Exemption Lowers Your Property Tax Bill

If you own and live in your home in Collin County, you can apply for a homestead exemption that removes part of your home's value from the tax calculation.

A homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of your home. That means you pay taxes on less than the full appraised value. To qualify, you must own the home and live in it as your primary residence as of January 1 of the tax year.

Apply with the Collin Central Appraisal District (CCAD) at collincad.org. The application window opens after January 1. The general filing deadline is April 30. There is no fee to file. You only need to apply once — the exemption stays on the property as long as you qualify. Seniors age 65 or older can stack an additional exemption on top of the general one.
