Flood Insurance

Flood insurance is separate from your homeowners policy

Standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage — you need a separate policy, and there is a 30-day waiting period before it takes effect.

Burnet County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). FEMA flood zones in the county run mainly along the Colorado River and creeks. If your property is in a mapped flood zone, your mortgage lender may require you to carry flood insurance. Even outside a mapped zone, flooding can happen.

A regular homeowners policy will not pay for flood damage. You buy flood coverage separately, usually through NFIP. There is a 30-day waiting period after you buy the policy before it covers you — do not wait until a storm is coming. If you are buying property in Burnet County, check the FEMA Flood Map Service Center at msc.fema.gov to see what zone your parcel is in before you close.
