Fishing Access
Fishing the Colorado River in Wharton County
The Colorado River runs through Wharton County and offers bank fishing, with TPWD maintaining leased public access points on the river.
The Colorado River is the main natural fishing water in Wharton County. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has signed lease agreements with landowners along the lower Colorado River to give anglers legal bank access at various points along the river. These sites allow fishing and launching of non-motorized boats, canoes, and kayaks.
A current Texas freshwater fishing license is required to fish. Use the TPWD leased access viewer to find current site locations along the lower Colorado — available sites and locations can change. TPWD also offers "free fishing days" each year when no license is needed — check tpwd.texas.gov for current dates.
