Who Sets Your Property Value in Wharton County

The Wharton County Appraisal District sets property values, and a separate tax office collects the bills — two different offices, two different jobs.

If you own property in Wharton County, the Wharton County Appraisal District (WCAD) decides what your property is worth for tax purposes. That value is then used by about 22 different taxing units — including the county, five school districts, and several cities — to calculate what you owe. WCAD is located at 308 E. Milam St. in Wharton.

The Tax Assessor-Collector's office, across the street at 309 E. Milam St., actually sends your bill and collects payment. If you disagree with WCAD's appraisal, you have the right to protest. Check WCAD's website for current deadlines, since protest windows change year to year.
