Flood Safety

Flash Floods and Low-Water Crossings Are Serious Hazards Here

The Hill Country terrain funnels heavy rain into rivers fast — low-water crossings on rural roads can go from dry to dangerous in minutes.

Kimble County sits on the Edwards Plateau, where rocky soil does not absorb much rain. When storms hit, water moves quickly into the Llano River and its tributaries. Many FM and ranch roads have low-water crossings — paved dips where roads cross creeks. These can flood without warning.

Texas law says you can be fined up to $2,000 and face up to 180 days in jail for driving around a barrier blocking a flooded road. The phrase 'turn around, don't drown' is taken seriously here. If you are new to the area, learn which roads near your property have low-water crossings. After heavy rain, check conditions before driving rural routes.
