Flood Safety
Flash floods and low-water crossings are serious hazards here
Burnet County's hilly terrain has hundreds of low-water road crossings that can fill with fast-moving water in minutes during heavy rain.
The Hill Country landscape is beautiful, but it is dangerous in heavy rain. Water drains off rocky hills very fast. Low-water crossings — roads that dip down to cross a creek — can go from dry to several feet deep in minutes. Burnet County has many low-water crossings that can flood quickly during storms. Most flood deaths in Texas happen inside vehicles.
When you see water over a road, turn around and find another route. The rule is simple: turn around, don't drown. Flood insurance does not come with a standard homeowners policy — it requires a separate policy with a 30-day waiting period before coverage starts. If you are buying property in a flood zone, check the FEMA flood map and talk to your insurance agent before closing. Burnet County maintains flood information through its Development Services Department.
