Flood Risk
Flooding is a real risk in parts of Gregg County
Parts of Gregg County — including areas in and around Longview, Kilgore, and Gladewater — lie in FEMA-mapped flood hazard areas.
The Sabine River runs through Gregg County from northwest to southeast. Low-lying land near it, and near smaller creeks, can flood after heavy rains. FEMA maps the flood risk for Gregg County through the National Flood Insurance Program. The FIRM (Flood Insurance Rate Map) covers Longview, Kilgore, Easton, Gladewater, and unincorporated parts of the county.
If your home is in a Special Flood Hazard Area (the '100-year flood zone'), your lender will likely require flood insurance. Even outside that zone, flooding can happen. Check your property's flood zone at the FEMA Flood Map Service Center (msc.fema.gov) before you buy. Texas flood insurance is separate from homeowners insurance — you buy it through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private carrier.
