The Rio Grande Can Flood — Know Your Risk

Properties near the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass face real flood risk, and a flood map can show whether your land is in a hazard zone.

The Rio Grande runs along Maverick County's western edge. It forms the border with Mexico. Parts of Eagle Pass and areas near the river sit in flood hazard zones. The Texas Water Development Board studied flood protection for Eagle Pass because of this risk.

Before buying or building near the river or any creek, look up the property on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center. FEMA maps show flood zones for every address.

If a lender requires flood insurance, check whether the property is in a Special Flood Hazard Area. That is the official term for a high-risk flood zone. Flood maps can change after new studies. Always use the current official map, not an old one.
