Homestead Exemption Can Lower Your Tax Bill
If you own and live in your home, you can file for a homestead exemption to reduce the taxable value.
Texas state law requires every school district to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their home's value for school taxes. Eagle Pass ISD participates, so that reduction applies here. Other taxing units — the county, city, or hospital district — may offer additional local exemptions of up to 20 percent of value.
File your application with the Maverick County Appraisal District. The general deadline is before May 1 of the tax year, but always confirm the current deadline with MCAD. You only need to file once as long as you keep living in the home. Use the Texas Comptroller's Form 50-114 to apply.
