Flood Risk

Flooding Is a Serious Risk Along the San Jacinto River

Parts of Montgomery County along the San Jacinto River and its tributaries face major flood risk, as Hurricane Harvey showed in 2017.

Hurricane Harvey in August 2017 caused record flooding across Montgomery County. Lake Conroe released over 70,000 cubic feet per second during the storm, and flooding hit areas along US 105, FM 1488, SH 242, and SH 99 near Conroe and Porter. Subdivisions near the river and its tributaries took on several feet of water.

Before buying a home near any creek, bayou, or the West Fork of the San Jacinto, check the FEMA flood map at msc.fema.gov. Even properties outside the mapped 100-year floodplain can flood. Flood insurance is not just for floodplain properties in this region.
