Special District Taxes
Many Montgomery County Neighborhoods Pay MUD Taxes
More than 100 Municipal Utility Districts in Montgomery County can add a separate tax on top of your regular county and school taxes.
A Municipal Utility District (MUD) is a special taxing district. It pays for water, sewer, and drainage pipes in areas outside city limits. If your home is in a MUD, you pay that district's tax rate on top of your other property taxes. Montgomery County has over 100 MUDs. Many are in fast-growing areas like The Woodlands, Porter, and other suburbs.
Before you buy, ask your title company or agent which MUDs cover the property. Each MUD sets its own tax rate. You can look up your address on the MCAD website or the Texas Comptroller's county directory to see every taxing unit that applies.
