Cultural Heritage

Victoria County has a diverse cultural history from multiple immigrant groups

Tejano, German, and Czech communities all helped shape the culture of Victoria County over the past two centuries.

Victoria County has a rich cultural mix. The De León colony in 1824 brought Mexican Catholic traditions. Those traditions still live on in Tejano culture today. German immigrants came in the mid-1800s and kept a strong community presence well into the 1900s. Czech settlers also moved into the region. The county holds a Czech Heritage Festival each October.

By 2014, the U.S. Census put the county's makeup at roughly 47% Anglo, 45% Hispanic, and 7% African American. These different backgrounds have shaped the county's food, music, faith communities, and sense of local identity.
